Traveling to Turkey, a blend of East and West

A trip to Turkey involves so many and different cultures that it almost feels like a whole continent, where the future and history mingle in this magical place that unites Europe with Asia. Here are some glimpses of other less touristic areas that we recommend you consider when planning your trip to Turkey:

On the south coast, Antalya stands out, famous for its numerous beaches and luxury resorts; Side, a small peninsula where you can visit the Temple of Apollo; Alanya, known as the Pirate’s Cave with its impressive castle and golden sandy beaches, and Kaş, a picturesque fishing village and starting point for exploring the ancient submerged city of Kekova. If you want to enjoy water sports on your trip to Turkey, we recommend the famous white sand beach and blue lagoon of Ölüdeniz.

In Turkey lie the ruins of ancient cities: Troy, Çatalhöyük, and Ephesus. The prophet Abraham, Homer, and the Apostle Paul were also born here. However, the country has a short history. Atatürk built modern Turkey from the ruins of the Ottoman Empire in 1929, with the aim of having a strong and modern country, and despite a sometimes tragic history, Turkey is an extremely friendly and hospitable country.

When to travel to Turkey?

The best time to travel to Turkey

The best time to organize a trip to Turkey depends on your preferences and the activities you want to include in your trip.

  • In general, Turkey’s high season is from June to August, when the weather is warmer and the beaches are bustling with tourists.
  • Spring (April and May) and autumn (September and October) are excellent times to travel to Turkey, as the temperatures are milder, there are fewer people, and hotels offer better promotions. Additionally, during spring, the tulip fields in Istanbul are in full bloom, and the weather is perfect for exploring Turkey’s historic cities.
  • If you are thinking of traveling through Turkey between November and March, keep in mind that the weather is colder and there is snow in some regions of Turkey. Cappadocia, for example, is famous for its fascinating landscapes during winter. If you enjoy skiing or winter sports, then this is the best time to travel to Turkey.

What can you do on a trip to Turkey?

If you are going to travel to Turkey, we recommend that you consider visiting:

  1. ISTANBUL: Considered one of the most beautiful cities in the world, it is incredibly rich in history and culture. Istanbul has it all: stunning architecture, delicious cuisine, and a vibrant cultural scene. As one of the oldest cities in the world, Istanbul has a fascinating history reflected in its monuments, mosques, and palaces.
  2. ANKARA: In addition to being the capital of Turkey, it is a city rich in history, home to numerous museums and monuments.
  3. CAPPADOCIA: A unique region in the world, known for its surreal landscapes, underground cities, and cave houses carved into the rock. Located in the heart of the country, Cappadocia is a must you cannot miss if you are travelling to Turkey.
  4. PAMUKKALE: The Turkish cotton castle. A magical place in southwestern Turkey. We recommend visiting its thermal waters if you want to add a moment of true relaxation to your trip to Turkey.
  5. EPHESUS: One of the best-preserved archaeological sites in Turkey that will transport you to the history of the fascinating Roman civilization.

Why include Istanbul in my trip?

  • In Istanbul, you can visit numerous mosques, such as the impressive Blue Mosque and the majestic Basilica of Hagia Sophia (Ayasofya). The latter was a Christian church, later converted into a mosque before being transformed into a museum.
  • Enjoy cruising along the iconic Bosphorus, the strait that separates Europe and Asia, one of Istanbul’s landmarks. The simultaneous view of two very different continents, one on each side of the river, is a must if you are travelling to Turkey.
  • Savour its cuisine: Istanbul’s food is rich in flavours and aromas, a unique blend of Ottoman, Persian, and Mediterranean influences. You can taste some traditional Turkish dishes like kebab, baklava, and the famous Turkish coffee.
  • Bargain while having tea at the Grand Bazaar: One of the largest and oldest covered markets in the world. It spans a bustling hub of artisans and traders spread over 60 streets and 4,000 shops where you can find traditional Turkish carpets, gold and silver jewellery, leather goods…

Why include Ankara in my trip to Turkey?

If you are passionate about history and culture, we suggest including Ankara in your trip to Turkey, as you can enjoy exploring its monuments and museums:

  • The Citadel of Ankara, an impressive fortress from the 3rd century BC. It offers panoramic views of the city, and inside you can explore the Alaaddin Mosque and enjoy the historic atmosphere.
  • The Mausoleum of Atatürk, a memorial monument dedicated to the founder of the Republic of Turkey, Mustafa Kemal Atatürk.
  • The Museum of Anatolian Civilizations, which houses an impressive collection of relics from the prehistoric and classical periods of the region.
  • Roman Theatre of Ankara: Built in the 2nd century AD, it is one of the most important historical sites in the city. Although much of it is in ruins, it is still used for cultural events.
  • The Ethnography Museum of Ankara, which offers insight into daily life in Turkey through the centuries.
  • Genclik Park: This park is a fantastic place to relax and enjoy the outdoors. It includes a lake and a skating rink.

Why include Cappadocia in my trip to Turkey?

Cappadocia is famous for its extraordinary lunar landscape, which includes unique rock formations known as “fairy chimneys”.

These geological structures, carved by erosion over centuries, create a surreal and picturesque landscape.

After Istanbul, Cappadocia is the most included destination in trips to Turkey.

  1. Hot air balloon in Cappadocia: One of the most fascinating experiences is taking a hot air balloon ride in Turkey, enjoying unforgettable views of the region’s rock formations at sunrise.
  2. As a finishing touch, we recommend having a unique experience by staying in cave hotels, carved into the rock thousands of years ago.
  3. If you love exploring nature and want to hike on your trip to Turkey, in Cappadocia you will also find numerous fascinating valleys and trails.
  4. If you are a history lover and are travelling to Turkey to learn about its history and culture, you will be fascinated by visiting Cappadocia’s underground cities.

Why include Pamukkale in my trip to Turkey?

Pamukkale attracts thousands of tourists each year thanks to its impressive travertine formations and hot springs. Pamukkale means “cotton castle” in Turkish.

Walking on the travertine formations, which resemble cotton or snow, created over thousands of years by the accumulation of calcium deposits from the hot springs that flow through the region, and taking in the stunning views of the white landscape and the green valley that supports it, is a fascinating natural wonder that will leave you breathless.

  1. Its hot springs have been used for thousands of years for their healing and relaxing properties. You can enjoy a bath in the natural thermal pools or relax in one of the many spas in the area.
  2. It also stands out archaeologically: in ancient times, the Romans built the city of Hierapolis around the hot springs of Pamukkale.
  3. You can also visit the ruins of the city, the Roman theatre, the Temple of Apollo, the necropolis, and the baths.

Why include Ephesus in my trip to Turkey?

If you want to immerse yourself in the ancient history of the region during your trip to Turkey, include in your visits:

  1. The Library of Celsus, built in the 2nd century AD in honour of Tiberius Julius Celsus.
  2. The Theatre of Ephesus, one of the city’s most iconic sites, with a capacity for over 20,000 people and believed to have been constructed in the 3rd century BC.
  3. The Temple of Hadrian, dating back to the 2nd century AD, whose façade is decorated with reliefs depicting Roman gods.

When you travel to Turkey, you will be amazed by the remains of one of the most impressive cities of the ancient world: as you walk along the stunning Marble Street and visit the House of the Virgin Mary, with its breathtaking views from the hilltop, considered a sacred place by Christians as it is believed that the Virgin Mary lived here in her final years.
